OUR STORY

Hey hi hello! Zoe here! How did The Buoys (pronounced ‘The Boys’) start? Well… it’s the year 2016 in Cronulla, Australia and I want to see local women on stages when I go to shows… so I started The Buoys! If you’d have told me back then that I’d be writing a blurb for a website, I’d have called you mad.

The Buoys is made up of Courtney (bass), Hilary (lead guitar), Tess (drums) and myself! Zoe (lead vocals/rhythm guitar). But why don’t we tuck into a little story of how The Buoys began…

In 2016, I had just started playing electric guitar and didn’t know any women in my area who wanted to start a band. I also didn’t know any other women my age in Cronulla who were already gigging, so I had to find musicians who might not have considered playing live before. Eventually, I was introduced to some cousins of a friend, and I showed up at their house with my guitar and a handful of songs, having never met them in person. (If you think blind dates are scary, this takes the cake.) We played our first show within a few weeks of that meeting. Moral of the story: even if you can’t play your instrument as well as you’d like, and even if you don’t know anybody, starting a band can happen in magical ways!

Flash forward to now where we’re based in the beautiful Inner West Sydney, and we have a new line-up of Buoys; Myself (Zoe) on lead vocals and guitar, Tess on drums, Courtney on bass and Hilary on lead guitar. Similarly to how The Buoys first started, we all met through friends of friends and didn’t know each other before we started playing together. What we’re trying to say is: start a band with strangers and watch it change your life! <3 DO IT!

Together we’ve released 2 EPs that in hindsight are a beautiful mouthful! ‘All This Talking Gets Us Nowhere’ and ‘Unsolicited Advice For Your DIY Disaster’, following on from the debut and VERY DIY ‘Soft Boy’ EP (which is hiding somewhere on the interwebs). We’ve played shows with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, DMAs, Soccer Mommy, The Dandy Warhols, IDLES… and yes we’re pinching ourselves (constantly). The first iteration of The Buoys released an EP called ‘Soft Boy’ that’s hiding in the dark corner of the internet for your listening pleasure (we all gotta start somewhere).

We released our debut album ‘Lustre’ in 2024! It is going to be a huge year and we can’t wait for you to see/hear all that’s to come! Thank you for your support, we couldn’t do it without you!

-Love, THE BUOYS!
